Changing the rear brakes on the Mercury Montego isn’t an overly difficult task for anyone with basic mechanical aptitude and some automotive-repair skills. The Montego is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. The rear brakes consist of a small, single-piston caliper, slip-off rotors and semi-metallic pads. While the front brakes perform the majority of the work during braking, the rear ones still wear out, although not quite as often. If you have a few hours and the right tools, you can save the hefty labor charge and change the rear brakes on your Montego yourself.
Tools Used: Tools, 2 wheel chocks, Lug wrench, Jack, 2 jack stands, Drop pan, Brake cleaner, Socket set, White lithium grease, Torque wrench
Change the Rear Brakes
Put the wheel chocks down in front of the front tires. Loosen the rear lug nuts using the lug wrench, but don’t remove them.
