How to Remove a Gas Tank on a Volkswagen Vanagon

16

The Volkswagen Vanagon is a popular vehicle among campers, as it has lots of room for friends and family, plus space for supplies. The vans have a rather odd gas tank, in that it uses a rubber grommet to mount the tank to the fuel filler neck. This grommet can dry out and rot, and when it does, gas will spill out of the tank. To fix the problem, you have to drop the gas tank and replace the grommet. First though, you need to remove the gas tank.

Tools Used: Tools, Jack, 4 jack stands, Flat-head screwdriver, Drain pan, 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set

Lift the Vanagon with the jack and set it on four jack stands, making sure there’s enough room under the van for you to crawl beneath it. Put the drain pan below the fuel filler neck. Remove the connection on the filler neck, using a flat-head screwdriver, and allow the gas to drain into the drain pan.
