The Jetta arrived in Volkswagen’s American lineup in the 1980 model year. The 2002 Jetta — four years removed from a redesign — had four engine sizes available: 1.8-liter, 1.9-liter, 2.0-liter and 2.8-liter. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine came only in the GL and GLS trim levels of the 2002 Jetta. Changing the oil in the 2002 Jetta’s 2.0-liter engine requires a very specific refilling process, as the engine is very sensitive to the oil level — overfilling the oil even the slightest bit triggers misfiring and a “check engine” light.
