The ignition control module is used in most vehicles to control the amount of spark going to the ignition coil, eventually leading to the spark plug wires. Getting to the ignition control module on a 1992 Mercury Topaz can be done in a few easy steps. The module is located at the base of the distributor near the front of the engine. You will need to remove the distributor to gain clear access to the ignition control module for cleaning or replacement.

Ignition Control Location
Pull the hood release, open the hood and support it with the hood prop. Locate the distributor at the front of the engine compartment, near the radiator. Looking from above, the distributor cap is round and black, and it has the ends of the spark plug wires connected to the top of the cap. Detach the two screws holding the distributor cap in place, using a screwdriver. Pull the distributor cap off the distributor. Unplug the electrical connector from the bottom of the distributor. You might need a small screwdriver to detach the tabs holding the harness together.
Place a mark on the bottom of the distributor and the engine block in order to reinstall the distributor in the same position after removal. Remove the mounting bolt holding the distributor to the engine block, using a wrench. Pull the distributor from the engine block. Locate the ignition control module at the base of the distributor. The module is a black, rectangular piece held in by two screws. It has an electrical connection on the side. The piece can be detached from the distributor by removing the two mounting screws with a screwdriver and removing the electrical connection.
