Your 1992 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight was available with or without what Oldsmobile called the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System, otherwise known as airbags. If you need to remove the steering wheel, to replace a turn signal switch, for example, the process only differs very slightly whether or not you have airbags. It’s very important to note that if you need to remove the steering wheel on your Oldsmobile, you need to disconnect the battery and wait a minimum of 15 minutes prior to beginning work.
Tools Used: Tools, 5/16 wrench, Phillips screwdriver, Socket, Ratchet, Steering wheel puller, Torque wrench
Remove Steering Wheel
Remove the battery cable from the negative terminal by turning the terminal bolt counterclockwise with the 5/16 wrench. Locate the fuse block under the driver’s side dash and remove the fuse labeled “SIR.” On the bottom of the steering column, disconnect the yellow wire from the connector. Make sure the steering wheel is locked in the straight ahead position.
Wait 15 minutes for the SIR system to fully deactivate. Failure to do so could result in inadvertent airbag deployment.
Remove the four screws on the underside of the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel trim piece/airbag housing. Carefully place the housing someplace away from your work area, like on a work bench, face up.
