How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 1993 BMW 318is

80

The 1993 BMW 318is is part of the E36 generation of the 3 Series, one of the cornerstones of the BMW lineup. The E36 model replaced the E30 and was later replaced by the E46. While generally considered reliable, well engineered vehicles, the E36 models are aging and need periodic maintenance to keep them on the road. Fuel pumps are one of those parts that will usually fail at some point, requiring their replacement. This is an easy job on a 318is.

Replace the Fuel Pump

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Open the gas cap to relieve pressure from the fuel tank. Slide the front seats forward. Raise the back seat by pulling up on it from the front, lower edge. Lift up the right side of the sound deadening material under the seat. This should expose a circular metal cover with wires going to it. Remove the four screws that hold the cover on with a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the foam seal underneath it. You will see the top of the fuel pump once the cover is removed.

Disconnect the wire connectors that fasten to the top of the fuel pump. Loosen the hose clamps that hold the fuel lines to the fuel pump with a Phillips head screwdriver. Place a pair of vise grips on each hose so that the hose is squeezed together and fuel will not spill out. Slide the hoses off of the fuel pump.
