Under federal law, cars are required to have either a direct or indirect tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) which tells the driver when the tire pressure is low. While indirect systems are less common, they are used in the Chevrolet Impala due to their reduced cost compared to direct systems. Since these systems do not monitor air pressure in tires (rather, the difference between tires), they won’t alert you if your tires lose air at the same rate. Resetting the TPM system is, therefore, necessary if your tires haven’t been recently refilled or replaced.
