On a car with a hatchback such as the Toyota Matrix, the rear struts can give out, making the hatch both difficult to lift and sometimes impossible to keep open. But these struts aren’t difficult to replace. With some simple hand tools and about a half hour of your time, it’s easy to replace the rear hatch lift supports for your Toyota Matrix.

Install a Rear Hatch Lift Support
Pop the hatch and have your assistant hold it up in place. It’s going to be heavy, so you may need assistance in one way or another with a prop rod such as a broom or piece of steel tubing.
Unclip the plastic covers that go around the struts. This can be done by hand and doesn’t require any special tools.
