The Honda Rancher ATV requires regular oil changes for optimal engine performance. ATV owners can perform the oil change in about 30 minutes, but many forget to tighten the oil drain plug. Failure to tighten the plug causes it to work its way loose and fall out, allowing the oil to escape.
Tools Used: Tools, 8 mm socket wrench, Socket extension, Torque wrench, Rags
Tighten an Oil Drain Plug
Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom-center of the Rancher. It is covered by a skid plate. Access holes allow you to reach the plug without removing the skid plate. Attach the socket and extension to the torque wrench. Do not overtighten the plug; this might strip the threads. Insert the socket — with the torque wrench and extension attached — through the opening in the skid plate. Turn the torque wrench clockwise; tighten the drain plug to 18 foot-pounds of torque. Clean around the plug with the rags. Watch for leaks.
