How to Remove a Fan on a Jeep Cherokee 5.2

The Jeep Cherokee 5.2-liter engine uses a viscous fan drive and blade assembly — a manual fan. It is attached to the water pump. The fan clutch is filled with a silicone-type material that expands when heated, thus turning the fan faster. The fan, surrounded by a fan shroud, sucks air through the radiator to cool the coolant. If the fan is not working properly, the Cherokee will overheat when you come to a stop for any length of time.

Remove a Fan

Loosen the fan’s mounting nut by turning it counterclockwise until it breaks loose, using the appropriate socket. Do not remove the nut yet. Remove the two nuts that hold the fan shroud to the crossmember, using the appropriate socket.
