When all you want to do is watch your favorite show, nothing is as frustrating as a picture problem with your Sony plasma television. Picture interference, including horizontal black lines, may appear suddenly even if the TV worked fine before. Often, changing your Sony TV’s settings makes horizontal black lines disappear. If different settings do not fix the problem, though, your TV may have a defect.
Eliminate Interference – Electronic objects, including cordless phones, microwaves and fluorescent lights, occasionally emit RF interference. This interference may causes anomalies, such as black horizontal lines, to appear on the Sony plasma television’s screen. Move all electronic devices, including battery-operated devices, away from the television before operation. If you cannot move electronic devices, keep them turned off while using the TV to reduce interference as much as possible.
Adjust Noise Reduction – Most new Sony plasmas, including the BRAVIA line of televisions, have several functions designed to reduce picture anomalies and interference. Activate your television’s Noise Reduction (NR) function to eliminate many picture problems. Adjusting the Sharpness or Picture Mode may also help. Many Sony televisions manufactured in 1997 or later also come with a Digital Reality Creation (DRC) feature. This proprietary feature, available only on Sony TVs, enhances high-resolution images and helps produce a more realistic picture. Activating Digital Reality Creation, if your TV has this feature, may reduce the appearance of horizontal lines.
Adjust Phase – Sony plasma televisions feature HDMI and component connections that allow you to connect the TV to your computer. When connected, the Sony TV functions as a computer monitor. In some cases, horizontal lines may appear when using the television as a monitor. To fix the issue, adjust the Phase feature on the television. You may also need to set the correct output signal depending on your television’s resolution.
Contact Sony – Some Sony televisions, such as the 52″ BRAVIA model, have a known defect that causes horizontal lines to appear on the screen. The defect usually develops within a few months to a year after first using the TV. After leaving the television on for 20 or 30 minutes, the horizontal lines may disappear temporarily. If adjusting your TV’s settings does not eliminate the lines, certain parts inside the television are most likely defective. Contact Sony or a certified electronics repair shop to replace the parts.
