As one of the most basic tasks in maintaining a Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV, changing the oil and filter would appear to be simple. While not especially difficult, draining the oil from the oil tank and the crankcase presents a challenge for a new ATV owner. You won’t need special tools, as a regular tool set will suffice, but set aside at least one hour to complete the job from beginning to end.
Tools Used: Tools, Lint-free rags, Oil pan, Socket wrench and sockets, Strap wrench, Oil filter, 2 qts. Polaris 0W40 motor oil
Change the Oil
Park the ATV on level ground and engage the parking brake. Start the ATV’s motor and let it idle in place for three minutes, then switch it off.
