How to Change the Alternator on a Pontiac Sunbird

83

The Pontiac Sunbird was manufactured with an alternating generator system that uses either a single belt or serpentine belt system to spin a rotor within a stator, creating electricity for the car. Either system was designed to make replacement a relatively simple procedure, but the serpentine design is by far the easiest. The average backyard mechanic can replace the alternator in a Sunbird in about 30 minutes.

Tools Used: Tools, Socket set, Screwdriver, Crowbar (single-belt systems)

Change the Alternator

Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise. Set the terminal wire aside so it’s not touching the battery or metal.
