Pontiac 6000 Crankshaft Position Sensor Removal Instructions – The crankshaft position sensor in the Pontiac 6000 sends an electrical pulse to the on-board computer each time one of the metal blades on the exciter ring located on the harmonic balancer passes by the sensor. This signal is processed into a digital square wave that the computer uses to calculate the position of the pistons in the engine. Without this signal, the computer can not accurately control ignition timing and fuel injector pulse width, and the engine may not start.
