Lexmark is one of numerous printer manufacturers that installs smart chips in printer ink cartridges. If you try to refill an empty cartridge with a third-party ink refill kit, your printer won’t recognize it. This is because the smart chip reads “empty” even though you’ve just refilled the ink reservoir. Fortunately, chip reset devices are legal and widely available from online retailers. Purchase a reset device for your specific Lexmark model or use a universal reset device.
- Refill the empty Lexmark ink cartridge according to the instructions provided in the ink refill kit.
- Locate the gold-toned smart chip on the ink cartridge. It’s usually found on the bottom or front end of the cartridge.
- Place the smart chip against the pins on the reset device. A red light will flash to show you that the chip is engaged. When the light turns green, usually six or seven seconds later, the cartridge chip is reset and ready to use.
Things Needed: Lexmark or universal chip reset device
Tip : In 2002, Lexmark sued a third-party ink cartridge company to prevent the firm from selling reset and recycled toner cartridges to consumers. They lost on appeal in 2004, and since then, it has been legal to purchase third-party cartridges and chip reset devices.
Warning: Some ink refill kits contain low-quality ink, so your print quality may not be as good as it would be with a brand-new cartridge from the manufacturer.
