How to Change a MOD File Extension on a JVC Video

Like many file formats that camcorders use for capturing and storing video, the MOD files created by JVC camcorders are not compatible with many media players and video-editing programs. If you want to watch the video on your computer or edit the video, you must first change the extension of the video to a format that the player or software that you want to use can recognize. Luckily, MOD files share properties with two of the most widely compatible video file formats, MPG and AVI, which makes the switch easy.

  • Open the “Start” menu on your computer and select “Computer” or “My Computer.” Double-click the “C:” drive if the MOD file is stored directly on the system’s hard drive. If the MOD file is stored on an external storage unit, such as a thumb drive or external hard drive, plug the drive into a USB port on the computer and select the drive letter of the external device instead of the “C:” drive.
  • Navigate to the folder in which the MOD file is stored on the computer. Once you are inside the folder, right-click on the MOD file to bring up the context menu.
